Advanced Pilot Readiness training for the Apache AH-64 helicopter.

The combination of Desdemona’s unique motion simulation with high resolution outside visuals, offers the essential preconditions to train complex piloting tasks in scenario’s that can be highly disorienting. In Desdemona the pilots train brownout landings, low-level mountain operations and flying in adverse weather conditions. This way Apache pilots are prepared for the potential dangers of spatial disorientation in new area’s of deployment.

Motion is essential

High fidelity motion simulation is essential to train pilot behavior in complex flying tasks, such as a brownout take-off and landing. Desdemona offers one-to-one attitude cueing in hovers and landings, strong braking cues to simulate the illusion of nose-down attitudes in a brownout and large vertical cues to simulate wind demarcation lines in the mountains.

UPRT training

Desdemona BV, in co-operation with AMST GmbH, offers Upset Prevention and Recovery Training (UPRT) with highly realistic motion simulation and a validated aircraft model.

We offer a training in Desdemona, that provides pilots the knowledge and skills to avoid, recognize, and recover aircraft states at the limits of the flight envelope. The recovery scenario’s include “high”-G recovery from upsets, approach-to-stall, and full stall. The SUPRA flight model realistically simulates aircraft behaviour at extreme attitudes and high angles-of-attack (including full stalls). The out-of-the-normal-envelope behavior of the flight model was validated by 9 test pilots.

The EU-funded research project SUPRA pushed for new simulator technologies to enable ground-based simulation of upset recovery in commercial transport aircraft. Desdemona provides a technological breakthrough by means of advanced motion cueing concepts for the simulation of sustained G-loads and high angular rates involved in upset conditions.

F-16 deepstall training

Empowered by the high-fidelity Bihrle F-16 flightmodel, Desdemona is able to deliver the proper motion cueing for departures from the normal flight envelope (“deep stall”, “inverted deep stall”).

The F-16 model correctly simulates the aircraft’s response in stall entries (nose-high and high dynamic departures) and in “pitch-rocking” recoveries. The motion solution features:

  • one-to-one pitch, roll and yaw cues in the stall and recovery
  • simulation of inverted, -1G, departure
  • large amplitude motions in high dynamic departures
  • full flight simulation from take-off to landing

Cougar AS-532 crew training

Flying a Cougar safely in critical environments depends on crew coordination and sensitive decisions of both pilots and the loadmaster. To support training of the pilot flying, and his crew, the Desdemona motion simulator is coupled in real-time to different loadmaster cabin simulators (both mock-up and Virtual Reality solutions). Training scenarios include bowl landings, pinnacle approaches, brownout/whiteout landings and adverse weather conditions. Key learning points, for both pilots and loadmaster, concern susceptibility to Spatial Disorientation in those scenarios. It is not just the pilot that is susceptible to disorientation; so is his crew!

Chinook CH-47 crew training

Flying a Chinook safely in critical environments depends on crew coordination and sensitive decisions of both pilots and loadmasters. To support training of the pilot flying, and his crew, the Desdemona motion simulator is coupled in real-time to different loadmaster cabin simulators (both mock-up and Virtual Reality solutions). Training scenarios include bowl landings, pinnacle approaches, brownout/whiteout landings and maneuvring a pick-up load in the mountains. Key learning points, for both pilots and loadmasters, concern susceptibility to Spatial Disorientation in those scenarios. It is not just the pilot who is susceptible to disorientation; so is his or her crew!

Dynamic flight simulation

Desdemona combines the capabilities of G-load simulation (centrifuge) with a fully gimballed cabin (pitch, roll and yaw), making it the perfect research tool to investigate new motion solutions for Dynamic Flight Simulation. In DFS the pilot is actively flying a fighter jet in the simulator while experiencing the proper G-loads involved. Although this is an effective method to train dealing with G-forces, the required centrifuge rotation causes Coriolis effects that are disorienting. In Desdemona new motion solutions for DFS were developed that are now being optimized in scientific studies with airforce pilots.
